Near the end of the 11th century St. Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, wrote an rationale defending the existence of God called the Proslogion. He wrote the book not as an argument against those who did not believe, but from the perspective of someone who was already a faithful Christian seeking a rationale for his faith. In fact, the original title for his work was supposed to be “Faith Seeking Understanding.” This discarded title has grown over time to be how many people explain the task of theology.
Thomas – whom we often call “doubting Thomas” – is another who deeply loved God, but needed help understanding what the news of the resurrected Lord meant. One of the things I love about this story is that Thomas gets the proof he needs to trust that God is alive in the world, and I don’t think it a coincidence that he finds evidence of God while he is in community with the disciples. That is where we will be tomorrow, a week after Easter. Come and join us – bring your doubts.
