I sometimes wonder if the reason we are so captivated with stories of the afterlife is that we have given up on the present. If there is no hope for the world we live in, then why not invest all our hope in a future world?

Sermon: Sunday, March 27, 2016: The Resurrection of Our Lord – Easter Day
The only evidence we are offered is an empty tomb and a question — “Why do you look for the living among the dead?” — which leaves us with our own work to do, as we wrestle with that question, and our own choice to make as we decide whether we will have the courage to do as the women did and proclaim Jesus Christ risen from the dead, or instead if we will be like those who discount all this as an “idle tale.”

There is salvation in this story, the story of Jesus, which is our story. And this is the night when we invite new sisters and brothers to join us in telling this story with our whole lives.
